The moment sailor is rescued from yacht as it sinks

Footage shows the moment a lone sailor was rescued just before his yacht sank in the Bristol Channel.

RNLI volunteer crews were called from Porthcawl and The Mumbles after being alerted to the vessel which had run aground.

A lifeboat was launched just after 15:00 BST on 28 August towards the sandbank.

Andrew Walmsley, from Porthcawl RNLI, commended the crew for doing a "great job" in difficult conditions as time was of the essence.

The lifeboat set off in "challenging conditions", the RNLI said, and crews were initially unable to spot the boat.

"Due to the conditions, the crew were also struggling to locate them using radar," a spokesperson added.

It was not until the sailor fired a red flare that they were spotted.

As the crews arrived on the scene, they realised the yacht had taken on a "significant amount of water".

The RNLI said a decision was made to put a crew member onboard the yacht to help, at which point it became clear they had to get the sailor off as quickly as possible.

The sailor was then transferred to the lifeboat moments before the boat sank.

Once a second crew arrived, the sailor was transferred to the all-weather lifeboat and taken safely ashore at Swansea.

Walmsley, a RNLI lifeboat operations manager, said the Bristol Channel can "present people with challenging conditions where it can be easy to get caught out".

"We would like to commend the casualty for being prepared and having multiple means to call for help as well as appropriate safety equipment," he added.

The RNLI has shared water safety advice on its website and said you should call 999, 112 or the Coastguard if you get in trouble in the water
