Two men have been jailed after a bungled robbery at a Bradford jewellery store ended with them both being caught red-handed.
Denzel Deneus, 34, was said to have been visiting the UK from the Netherlands for a wedding when he targeted Royal Jewellers on Manchester Road with his accomplice Mohamed Balmakhtar, 27.
Deneus was found with gold jewellery worth £20,000 in his pockets when police arrived at the scene and caught the pair on 10 September, after they had attacked the shop's owner, who raised the alarm.
Both men, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to robbery. At Bradford Crown Court earlier, Deneus was jailed for four years, with Balmakhtar jailed for three years and nine months.
The court heard neither man had any previous convictions, which Recorder Simon Ward said made their offending all the more surprising.
The day before the robbery they had gone into the shop and Deneus had bought a ring for £55, telling the shop owner he would return to buy a bracelet for his girlfriend.
Prosecutor Adam Walker said the next day, at about 13:20 BST, the pair were let into the shop again after the owner recognised them.
When he offered them a handshake CCTV footage showed one of the men grabbing his arm while the other began punching him in the face.
The owner was able to press the panic alarm and activate security smoke as the assault continued.
At one point he tried to take refuge in the toilet, but he was overpowered and further attacked.
Police also recovered a claw hammer from the scene which had been used as a tool, along with a Cartier watch thought to have been stolen.
