A three-month-old girl has died while out camping with her family in a Staffordshire woodland.

The youngster experienced cardiac arrest – when the heart stops beating – near Strawberry Lane, a road south of Cheslyn Hay village, on Saturday

She was declared dead soon after air ambulance crews arrived at 8.45am.

Her ‘unexplained’ death was an ‘isolated incident’, the force said today.

Det Insp Katie Gregory said: ‘While the investigation remains at an early stage, this is an isolated incident and we understand that the child’s family was camping in the area.

Officers have cordoned off a fishing lake in the Wyrley and Essington Branch Local Nature Reserve, about 550 metres northwest of Strawberry Lane.

One witness said she directed paramedics towards the beauty spot.

Drone footage shows at least four tents and camping chairs close to the fishing platforms.

District councillor Robert Duncan said in a Facebook post that the baby’s death is ‘deeply upsetting’.

He added: ‘As soon as the full and confirmed details are formally shared with me, I will provide a further update to residents.

‘Until then, please avoid speculation and allow the family and responders the privacy and respect they deserve.’
