Tim Curry’s cause of death has been revealed, one week after the actor was found dead in his Los Angeles home.

The actor, who had suffered from significant health problems since a major stroke in 2012 left him unable to walk, died at the age of 80 on 25 August.

It has now been revealed that the renowned actor, known for his roles in Rocky Horror Picture Show and Clue, died from coronary artery disease.

According to documents obtained by People from the Los Angeles County Department, a history of stroke and kidney cancer were also listed as other significant conditions that contributed to his death.

However, they did not result in the underlying cause of the 80-year-old’s death.

Whilst Curry had been open about his 2012 stroke, he had not publicly shared his kidney cancer diagnosis.

Additionally, the document states that no operations were performed for either his coronary artery disease, kidney cancer or history of stroke.

The British actor was known for larger-than-life characters, including Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Pennywise the Clown in the 1990 It miniseries.

He also had well-known roles in Clue, Muppet Treasure Island and Home Alone 2.

In 2012, he switched over to predominately voice acting, after suffering a stroke which resulted in him having to use a wheelchair.

Speaking of the stroke, he said: “It was so strange.

“I was actually having a massage, and the guy who was giving me a massage said, ‘I’m worried about you. I think we should call a doctor.’ I felt fine. I had no symptoms I was aware of. I wasn’t in pain.”

In September, 2025, the actor attended a Rocky Horror screening to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary with his co-stars.

Speaking to the audience, Curry said: “I still can't walk, which is why I'm in this silly chair, and that's very limiting. So I won't be singing and I won't be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg.”
