Tottenham confirm Deadline Day signing in rare transfer move
Tottenham have completed the permanent signing of centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea.
understands Spurs are set to pay around £7million to bring the 28-year-old in as a replacement for Kevin Danso, who has joined Sunderland on loan with a £25m obligation to buy after asking to leave.
Spurs initially wanted to bring Tosin in on loan but, having struck an agreement to sign his Chelsea team-mate Mykhailo Mudryk on a season-long loan, they pursued a permanent deal.
"I'm in an important part of my career and speaking to the head coach and knowing the type of football he wants to play, I think it's a very good fit,” said Arabioyo after signing. “He wants the team to play with courage and that's something that I always look to do.
"I want to achieve the absolute best, to push this team and this club as much as possible to where we deserve to be.
"That's something that has to be done every single day, especially on the training pitch, and I will be bringing that mentality to the club."
De Zerbi added: "Tosin is a strong, athletic defender who plays with confidence and understands the demands of playing at the highest level.
"I've also been impressed with his mentality and desire to be part of what we are building. He knows the responsibility that comes with representing this club.”
Premier League clubs can only loan one player from a single team in the division, so Spurs were unable to negotiate loans for both Tosin and Mudryk.
Spurs had not been prioritising a new centre-back before tonight’s deadline but entered negotiations for Tosin once it became clear that Danso wanted to move on.
Danso has joined Sunderland on loan, with Spurs only willing to sanction his departure once they had found a replacement.
Roberto De Zerbi confirmed over the weekend that Danso was one of three players to express their desire to leave the club before the end of the transfer window.
Richarlison and Pape Matar Sarr were the other two players left out of Spurs’ squad against Newcastle after informing De Zerbi that they wanted to explore opportunities elsewhere.
