Tottenham injury update: Jan Paul van Hecke, Pedro Porro, Dejan Kulusevski latest news and return dates

Tottenham have a key new injury concern to contend with as the Premier League’s return edges closer.
Spurs looked to have remained unharmed by a slew of new injuries affecting several Premier League clubs through the first half of an extended first international break of the season.
That is until summer signing Jan Paul van Hecke went down during a Netherlands training session on Wednesday, leading him to follow fellow Tottenham defender Pedro Porro in withdrawing from duty.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi will be sweating on his fitness before Spurs go to fellow strugglers Manchester United next weekend desperate to pick up their first Premier League win of the campaign at the sixth attempt, having finally scored their first goals against Aston Villa but lost 3-2 at home to sink to the foot of the table.
Spurs fans will also be hoping that Dejan Kulusevski can finally return soon, though the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert remain sidelined. Here is all the latest Tottenham injury news and return dates, just over a week out from their high-profile visit to Old Trafford.
Van Hecke has largely impressed for Spurs since completing a £52million transfer from Brighton in the summer, not missing a single minute in the Premier League so far and starting all but one of their seven games across all competitions.
He also played the full 90 minutes for Xavi’s Netherlands in their opening Nations League matches against Germany and Serbia, lining up alongside Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk at centre-back, and would have been expected to do likewise in Greece on Thursday and in Sunday’s return game against Serbia.
However, Van Hecke was forced to withdraw from a training session after just seven minutes on Wednesday and has now pulled out of the squad entirely and returned to Tottenham, with Xavi later revealing that the issue stems from an incident that occurred against Serbia.
“During the match against Serbia, someone stepped on him,” the new Netherlands boss said before the game against Greece.
“He didn’t realise it during the match, but afterwards it was impossible for him to play.
“He really wanted to try, but he was in a lot of pain. That is why we decided to take him off the list.
“He tried to participate in recovery training (on Tuesday). He tried again today, but he couldn’t touch the ball.”
Potential return date: Unknown, pending further assessment
Porro did not go away on international duty with Spain, missing the clash with England at Wembley having withdrawn from Luis de la Fuente’s squad with a hamstring injury suffered against Aston Villa.
The right-back was replaced after just 19 minutes in that game, hitting the ground in frustration and limping off having made just his third start of the season following a muscle issue that ruled him out of the previous two matches. He also had an extended break following Spain’s World Cup success in the summer.
Reports have stated that the latest injury will sideline him for around a month, with Porro said to have been working with specialist fitness coaches in Spain at the SPZ Iron Training Club.
If that aforementioned timeline is to prove accurate, then it seems likely that he will make his return at home to Coventry on October 19, or in the subsequent London derby clash with rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Potential return date: Monday, October 19 vs Coventry (H) or Saturday, October 24 vs Chelsea (A)
A surprise loan signing from Chelsea on Deadline Day, Mudryk made his first competitive appearance since November 2024 off the bench in the goalless draw with Nottingham Forest.
However, that remains his only outing for Tottenham to date thanks to an ankle injury suffered in training afterwards that a frustrated De Zerbi later described as “stupid”.

A timeline for Mudryk’s potential return was put at six to eight weeks in early September, so pinpointing an exact game for his likely comeback is tricky.
He certainly won’t face Manchester United, while he isn’t eligible to play against parent club Chelsea on October 24.
If he isn’t ready for selection against Coventry, then the visit of Crystal Palace to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on October 31 could well be right for Mudryk.
Potential return date: Saturday, October 31 vs Crystal Palace (H)
Kulusevski has not played for Tottenham since May 2025 as the result of a serious right patella (kneecap) injury that required surgery, while he has suffered setbacks during his long and difficult recovery.
The Swedish international resumed full first-team training earlier in September, though Spurs are understandably being cautious not to rush him back too soon and he was absent again for a week or so.
“We have to manage Deki [Kulusevski] in the best way we can, with the medical staff, physical staff, but it's a great thing for us,” De Zerbi said recently. “He's a good player, he's a good guy and he deserves to play again.

“We have to work day by day, also for Deki it's important the international break because when he will be at the top of condition and pass over the injury, I think it's a great signing. A new signing for us, another new signing.”
Kulusevski was seen this week taking part in training again at Hotspur Way with the rest of Tottenham’s players who are not on international duty, leading to renewed hope that his comeback is close.
An exact date for his return is still not known, though there have been tentative reports that he could potentially appear in late October.
Potential return date: Late October/November
Simons has been sidelined since rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during the win over Wolves in April.
It was recently reported that Simons had been stepping up his rehabilitation during a trip to the United States, though a return to the pitch is not expected in 2026.
Potential return date: Early 2027
Odobert also needed surgery after rupturing the ACL in his left knee during the defeat by Newcastle back in February.
There have been rumours that the French winger is in the late stages of his rehab and could be in a position to play some part for Tottenham in the latter part of November.
Potential return date: Late November
