Tottenham 'retain clause' in Harry Kane contract after Ballon d'Or win and new Bayern Munich deal

Tottenham's agreement with Bayern Munich over Harry Kane remains in place, despite the 2026 Ballon d'Or winner signing a new contract.
After weeks of speculation, it was announced on Thursday that Kane has committed his future to Bayern until the summer of 2029 and reportedly becoming the highest-paid player in Europe by base salary.
Kane's new deal comes hot on the heels of winning the 2026 Ballon d'Or award over Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal, though he is now targeting more team success with the Bundesliga giants.
“We signed the contract yesterday, but the decision was made quite a long time ago," he said. "As I’ve said before, I know I’m part of a great team, that we’re competing for the Champions League and for every title.
"It’s important for me to be somewhere where I can improve. There’s no doubt about that here. My family is happy that we can stay here – overall, everyone’s happy.”
While Kane is happy and settled in Germany, a return to England with Tottenham at some point in the future has not completely ruled out following the new contract - even if there is currently no suggestion of this scenario materialising.
Spurs have confirmed that as part of Kane's move to Bayern in 2023, they negotiated a clause allowing them to match any bid made for the striker.
However, it was recently suggested by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano that Bayern were looking at removing such clause which would have all-but ruled out a return to the Premier League for Kane.
Now, Telegraph Sport have reported that Spurs retained their first-option matching rights for the England captain.
As such, should Bayern - who are said to currently view Kane as “untouchable” - agree to sell the striker before his new contract expires, Tottenham would have to decide whether to match the bid in order to give the striker a decision to make.
The report also states there is no fixed fee in Spurs’ first-option matching rights.
