Tottenham revive talks over defender deal ahead of transfer deadline
Tottenham defender James Rowswell is attracting interest from a number of League One clubs over a potential loan move before the transfer deadline.
understands that Spurs are open to letting the 20-year-old centre-back leave on loan, with Rowswell keen to gain senior first-team minutes this season.
Four League One clubs registered their interest in Rowswell at the start of the summer, but talks were put on hold after the youngster suffered a foot injury that disrupted his pre-season.
With Rowswell now back to full fitness, negotiations have resumed with three of those interested, though at this stage no agreement has been reached.
Rowswell’s preference is to leave on loan but there remains the possibility that he stays at Spurs if a deal does not suit all parties.
A product of Spurs’ academy, Rowswell signed a new contract in April shortly after he made his Premier League debut in a 1-1 draw away to Liverpool in March.
Rowswell is one of a number of talented young centre-backs that have come through Spurs’ academy in recent years.
Ju’nai Byfield, 17, made his senior debut last season when he came off the bench during Spurs’ 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
The England youth international went on to make three first-team appearances last season but missed pre-season due to injury.
The absence of Rowswell and Byfield from Spurs’ pre-season tour in Australia and Asia handed 18-year-old Malachi Hardy the opportunity to impress, and he was regularly entrusted with minutes by Roberto De Zerbi. Hardy has also been linked with a loan move this summer.
