Roberto De Zerbi faces his first cup match of the season tonight as Tottenham host Charlton in the second round of the Carabao Cup. The Italian is under a bit of pressure to get it right today after his new-look Spurs stumbled in their Premier League opener, suffering a 3-0 humbling away at Brentford. It has been a summer of uncharacteristically heavy investment for Spurs, and this fixture against Charlton should give them a good chance to get minutes and the legs and continue building relationships.
There could be a debut for Savio, the latest arrival in north London, after his transfer from Manchester City was confirmed on Tuesday. He has been registered in time for this match, but it remains to be seen whether he will get the chance to introduce himself to the Tottenham faithful.
The Carabao Cup third round draw, where a number of Premier League sides will discover their next opponents, will take place this evening as well and is expected to get underway at around 10.30pm BST. Alan Hutton: Spurs need to temper expectations for this season
“I think top four is a big ask for Tottenham Hotspur this season.
“I know they’ve been through a transitional period with different managers, different personnel, and it’s been difficult, but to finish 17th two years in a row and go from there to top four, even though they’ve spent a lot of money, and spent it wisely, that’s a big jump in one season.
“Spurs have needed something like this, a bit of a reckoning, to get back to being the sort of club they should be, and I think if they were to finish sixth or around there this season, that would go down as a successful season in my book. It might not keep the fans happy as I’m sure they expect more with the business they’ve done but that’s how I look at it.
“After the last couple of years, a top six finish would be a good result, but they have spent well, and I think in Roberto Di Zerbi they have a top manager who can get the best out of the players, so I wouldn’t be surprised is they exceeded my expectations to finish top five or top four.

It is a very heavy rotation from Charlton tonight.
They make ten changes, and top scorer Tyrese Campbell is left out of the starting XI.
