Town's 215-year-old chapel goes to auction for £1

A 19th Century revivalist chapel is going to auction with a guide price of just a £1.

The Grade II listed Ebenezer Chapel once held up to 900 worshippers but the building, with its long curved pews and high arched windows, was last used in 2009 and is now overgrown and derelict.

Paul Fosh Auctions said the "substantial detached property" in Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf, had partial renovation work done but its planning permission for conversion to five flats had now lapsed.

"This large former chapel which also has a domestic-sized single garage is in the sought-after location of Trecynon," said auctioneer Sean Roper.

An inside view of the church with curved rows of wooden pews, tall arched windows and grey mottled peeling walls. Debris, ladders and building materials cover the lower floor and torn green netting hangs from the crumbling ceiling.

Roper said: "The Grade II listed chapel has two storeys of accommodation and sits in a sizeable but now overgrown plot with potential access from the front and rear of the site."

The site is about 0.23 acres and sits amid "well-established residential housing" about half a mile away from the town centre.

The property goes up for auction starting on 8 October.
