Train services on the main west coast train route were suspended during the morning rush hour on Monday, after a person was found dead on the tracks in Lancashire.
British Transport Police (BTP) said officers were called to Leyland railway station just before 07:00 BST, following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, with the person pronounced dead at the scene.
Avanti West Coast initially said lines were closed between Preston and Wigan North Western due to "emergency services managing an incident", but later said lines had re-opened. It warned "residual delays and some alterations are expected".

A BTP spokesman said: "Officers were called to Leyland railway station at 6.53am today (12 October) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
"Following the emergency services dealing with an earlier incident between Preston and Wigan North Western / Bolton, all lines have reopened," said a statement by National Rail.
"As services recover, trains running through these stations may continue to be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised."
