Everton have had a bid accepted by Monaco for United States striker Folarin Balogun.

The Toffees offered around £40m for the 25-year-old as they seek to strengthen their attack before tonight’s deadline.

Should Balogun agree to the move, it would mark a return to the Premier League three years after he left Arsenal for Monaco in a £35m deal.

Some quotes from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who says: “I said, we are trying to improve the squad, and until tomorrow night we’re going to try to do that.

“I’ve been disconnected from the world for 24 hours because I think my energy and focus has to be on the match.

“I will get back on it now. We know that the depth has to be really big when you are fighting for four competitions in the manner that we play as well. So we’re going to try to do that.”

Crystal Palace have revived talks with Marseille for Netherlands midfielder Quinten Timber, reports .

The 25-year-old is the twin brother of Arsenal right-back Jurrien Timber.

According to the same paper, Palace are determined to keep England goalkeeper Dean Henderson, 29, after a bid from Nottingham Forest.

Despite coveting Lewis Hall and other left-back targets this summer, it looks more likely that Manchester United will not sign another left-back today, leaving them going into a more congested season with a weary Luke Shaw as their only recognised option in that role.

Club officials tell us Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can play there, as could Patrick Dorgu, but none of those options would be deployed in their strongest position on the left. With Hall too expensive, executives are looking at loan options, with Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde a top pick. Barca want a straight sale, though. A more measured summer window was long overdue at Old Trafford, but it does feel not bringing in another left-sided defender is a risk they cannot afford to take.

Ethan Nwaneri will join Borussia Dortmund today on a season-long loan. Arsenal have traditionally had a real weakness when it comes to selling. No longer – they’ve pulled off a masterstroke by getting Al-Hilal to pay £55.7m for Gabriel Martinelli, with Gabriel Jesus also joining Barcelona. That’s two forwards who weren’t part of Mikel Arteta’s plans.

Arteta has confirmed Arsenal will look to be active on the final day as Julian Alvarez looks for a new club having burned his bridges at Atletico Madrid. Curiously Viktor Gyokeres has not been given a minute yet, so it is falling to Kai Havertz in attack.

A chaotic end to a chaotic few weeks, with the richest Premier League clubs primarily buying from each other – we can expect more of the same today. Whether that reflects a lack of imagination or simply an acceptance that buying off each other has become the accounting strategy du jour is open to interpretation, but you can’t doubt that such silliness is all quite exciting.

For example: imagine being told six weeks ago, when he was training by himself on non-league pitches in London, that Mykhailo Mudryk would have a £75m buy option on his head.

Fulham are trying to bring in two midfielders and it looks like they will wrap up moves for Manuel Angel and Hugo Larsson today. However, Kenny Tete’s sale to Everton – who are in desperate need of a right-back – is up in the air. Fulham also want to bring in another centre-back, with Fikayo Tomori one option as AC Milan look to offload the former Chelsea defender.

Newcastle’s big business today is finalising a move for Matias Fernandez-Pardo in a £51m switch from Lille. There’s huge excitement at Newcastle that they’ve managed to pull off a deal for their “alpha” target.

My understanding now is that will be the last bit of business they will do today in terms of incomings. Eight ins, a new manager and a record incoming – that’s not bad at all.

Nick Woltemade to Juventus will get done today – a season-long loan with no obligation to buy for £3.5m – and there will be some loan outgoings.

Out-of-favour Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee rejected a loan move to Fiorentina earlier this week in the hope he could secure his preferred switch to Juventus, but Nick Woltemade’s arrival in Turin means that exit route is now off the table.

While Zirkzee is not overtly agitating for a move, he would prefer at least a loan departure today in order to secure more regular first-team action. United do not want him to leave, as they do not have a replacement lined up, but sources said if some form of fee can be agreed – a loan payment as well as an option or obligation to buy included – then they would be open to letting the Netherlands international go.

One to watch today, with other Italian clubs, Roma and Napoli, also in the hunt. Aston Villa are said to be monitoring the situation, too.

Marcus Rashford will be staying despite another summer of speculation. United will also soon begin contract talks with Bruno Fernandes.

Tottenham have agreed a deal for Kevin Danso to join Sunderland after rebuffing the Black Cats’ initial approach. The centre-back will move to the Stadium of Light on loan with an obligation to buy for £25m. Mikey Moore has also finalised a loan to FC Koln that was agreed several weeks ago but was contingent of Spurs finding a replacement.

Richarlison’s future is up in the air after a series of Instagram posts in which he suggested he would not be forced into an Everton return. Although they were separate deals, the move for Iliman Ndiaye to go the other way has also collapsed – it’s now expected that the Everton winger will join Manchester City.

Spurs will replace Danso by signing Tosin Adarabioyo in a deal believed to be in the region of £7m. Mykhailo Mudryk will follow him from Chelsea in a loan, with an option to buy of around £75m.
