Trevor Nelson has confirmed he will return to host his BBC Radio 2 show on Monday September 7, after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour.

The broadcaster, 62, shared a post to Instagram in June saying he was taking a break from work commitments to deal with “health issues”.

In another post in August, Nelson said his “world was turned upside down” when he found out he had a tumour.

He confirmed his return to the airwaves during an appearance on the Sara Cox Breakfast Show on Friday morning.

He said: “Oh hi Sara Cox… have I missed anything? Now where were we before I was rudely interrupted?

“It’s been a minute, I know… but over the next few weeks I’m getting back to where I belong… in the Radio 2 studio, behind the microphone and spinning some records.

“It’s so good to be home and I’d be delighted if you could join me Monday afternoon from 2.

“Just ask your smart speaker to play BBC Radio 2, but for now Sara… it’s Fri-yayyyyy!”

Nelson is making a staggered return to Radio 2, getting behind the mic for two days next week – Monday (7th) and Wednesday (9th); three days the week after – Monday (14th), Wednesday (16th), and Friday (18th); and four days the following week – Monday (21st), Tuesday (22nd), Thursday (24th) and Friday (25th); before returning full-time from Monday September 28.

Cox said of Nelson’s return: “We are absolutely thrilled, Trevor. We love you mate, we love you so much! We are so happy that you’re coming back.

“I had a little listen to that trail yesterday, and I was yes, so good. Just feels like the family are coming back together. Trev, we love you mate, we can’t wait.”

In his video in August, Nelson explained he had spent the last month “recuperating, resting, and recovering” after receiving surgery which went “incredibly well”, and he hoped to return to work soon.

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan, fellow DJ Melvin Odoom, singer Craig David and EastEnders actress Diane Parish were among the stars who offered their support, as well as presenters Zoe Ball and Clara Amfo.

Nelson has worked for radio stations including Kiss FM, Radio 1, Radio 2 and MTV during his decades-long broadcasting career.
