Tributes have been paid to former Bay City Rollers guitarist Neil Henderson, who has died at the age of 73.

Henderson was in the pop rock band from 1970-72 and performed on their debut chart single Keep on Dancing, but left shortly before Rollermania propelled them to worldwide fame.

He went on to join another successful Scottish band, Middle of the Road, which had a number one hit a few years earlier with Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep.

His former Middle of the Road bandmates said his memory would live on through his music and with all those who had shared a stage with him.

One of Henderson's two daughters, Shona, said he left the Bay City Rollers just after the release of their second single as he was unhappy with the band's musical direction.

She said his love of music was a constant throughout his life. Following the death of their mother, he set up a recording studio at his west of Scotland home because he knew he could finally "get way with it".

In a statement, Middle of the Road described him as "our original lead guitarist, songwriter and friend".

"We wish to send our sincere condolences to Heather and Shona, his two daughters, and all his family and friends," the statement continued.

"His memory will live on with all who had the pleasure of sharing the stage with him as will his music."
