Two people accused of trafficking teenagers to Thailand as part of an international drug ring have appeared in court.

It is alleged they used two 17-year-olds as drug couriers after they were caught with 64kg (141lb) of cannabis in their suitcases while travelling back to the UK.

The teenagers from Cardiff, were arrested in Thailand in June and remain in custody. They are being supported by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Four other people appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court last Friday in connection with the case.

A 23-year-old man from Keighley, West Yorkshire, who was also arrested on suspicion of improper importation of controlled drugs, has been bailed.

Jeanne, from Llanrumney, and Sani, from Newport, are both charged with conspiring to fraudulently evade a prohibition on the importation of a Class B drug and four counts of conspiring to arrange or facilitate the travel of another person with a view to exploitation.

Jeanne and Sani were remanded in custody and will next appear with their co-accused at Cardiff Crown Court on 4 September.

South Wales Police officers were told in June the teenagers had been arrested, and launched an investigation into the "circumstances" behind their trip.

A spokesman for the force said: "The children remain in custody in Thailand where they are being supported by their families and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

"The families have been updated regarding the arrests and charges."
