Two Latvian men arrested for alleged trespass at an RAF base used by US military intelligence have been bailed, Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) said.

The pair, aged 36 and 32, were arrested on suspicion of entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK after being found inside RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire at 2am on Thursday.

The men, who are UK residents, were taken to a Cambridgeshire police station but have now been released on bail with strict conditions.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of CTP London, said officers are still trying to “identify any potential motivation behind why the men were at that location”.

She reiterated that the investigation has not found anything to suggest the incident is connected to events at RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire, last month.

Ministry of Defence security patrols had identified an abandoned vehicle near the perimeter of the base at about 10pm on Wednesday.

Further searches were carried out around the site and a small breach of the perimeter fence was identified.

The men were located and arrested initially on suspicion of trespass on a prohibited site and criminal damage, and later on suspicion of an offence under the National Security Act 2023 – namely entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK.

Two searches at addresses in the Peterborough area were carried out in connection with the investigation.

Ms Flanagan said on Friday: “We’re very aware of the recent heightened interest and concern around military sites, but there is nothing from our investigation so far to suggest this incident is connected to the events at RAF Fairford last week.

“Our investigation continues and we are working closely with colleagues from the Ministry of Defence Police and Cambridgeshire Constabulary on this.

“A key line of enquiry remains to identify any potential motivation behind why the men were at that location, and this includes whether it may be connected to any criminal activity.”

She urged the public to “remain vigilant” and to contact police with any concerns by calling 0800 789321 or reporting online via www.gov.uk/ACT.

The base is home to the US’s intelligence operations centres for Europe and Africa, as well as a Nato intelligence hub, according to the Central Intelligence Agency’s website.
