Two passenger jets collide on Los Angeles airport taxiway

Delta Air Lines Airbus A350-941 and an Air Canada Boeing 777-233LR on the ground at Los Angeles International Airport after they collided.

A chunk of an aircraft wing was ripped off when two passenger planes collided on the tarmac at Los Angeles International Airport.

Dramatic scene unfolded at LAX yesterday, when a Delta Air Lines and Air Canada plane swiped each other.

The Air Canada flight just landed from Toronto when its wing was clipped by the outbound Delta jet.

The Delta plane had 290 people on board and it was preparing to taxi to the runway when the aircraft made contact.

Footage appears to show part of the Air Canada plane’s stabiliser almost fully sliced off, with a piece from the other aircraft’s winglet still wedged in.

A passenger on board the Delta aircraft claimed the plane was taxiing when the Air Canada aircraft appeared to move into its path.

The affected aircraft were pulled from service, according to ABC6.

The Air Canada flight AC785, a Boeing 777, had landed at 10.30am local time, according to tracking website Flightradar24.

A spokesperson for Delta told ABC7: ‘While taxiing at Los Angeles International Airport, a Delta aircraft made contact with an Air Canada aircraft.

‘Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and we apologise to our customers for the experience and delay in their travels.’

Operations at LAX continued uninterrupted throughout the incident.

Officials at the Federal Aviation Administration and the national transport safety watchdog were reportedly notified.

Metro has contacted Delta and Air Canada for a comment.

A British Airways flight made headlines this week after it suffered a technical issue and suddenly descended 27,000ft.

The BA295 flight from Heathrow to Chicago was around an hour into the journey and cruising at 37,000ft when it declared an emergency.

Passengers said they felt the plane descend ‘noticeably’ and oxygen masks appeared.

Scott Tanner was on the flight when the masks dropped, accompanied by an automated announcement instructing passengers to put them on.

‘There was simply silence apart from the automated announcement repeating on a loop, which was probably the most disconcerting part. Despite this, everyone remained remarkably calm. I did not hear a single scream,’ he said.
