Two people dead after workplace incident near rural road

Emergency services including fire engines, fire cars and an ambulance parked close-by each other on a country road with trees and a footpath to the side.

Two people have died following what's been described as a workplace incident at a road in County Down.

Emergency services are in attendance at the scene on the Ballygowan Road in Crossnacreevy.

It happened at about 10:45 BST on Friday.

Three ambulances and two hazard response teams were sent but no one was taken from the scene.

Northern Ireland's Health and Safety Executive (HSENI) said they were "aware of an incident at a workplace" in the area and inspectors were on-site making enquiries.

"We are currently liaising with the emergency services and other relevant agencies," it added.

Police have said that the Ballygowan Road is closed and motorists are advised to take another route.

The Democratic Unionist Party MP Gavin Robinson said on social media that his "thoughts are with their families and loved ones at this devastating time".

Alliance Party MLA Peter McReynolds said it is "an absolutely heartbreaking incident" and his thoughts are with the families and emergency service personnel.
