Two people have been killed after a BMW left a road and smashed into a lamppost in Rotherham.

The white BMW 3 Series swerved off the East Bawtry Road carriageway ataround 6.43pm on Saturday.

A man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been released on police bail.

The fiery wreckage can be seen smoking in the middle of the road with the vehicle appearing to have struck a lamppost in the central reservation.

Members of the public fought alongside firefighters, paramedics and police to save the people inside. But both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe the BMW had been travelling alongside a blue BMW 4 Series before the collision.

Formal identification of those involved has not yet taken place.
