'Utter shock' for teen who lost eye in glass attack

JJ lies in hospital with a large bandage over his right eye.

A teenager has lost an eye after he was attacked with a bottle in Blackpool.

JJ Shingleton, 17, was allegedly glassed with a vodka bottle at a party in Bond Street on Saturday.

JJ, who is in remission from cancer, has undergone two operations, resulting in his right eye being removed.

Lancashire Police said officers were called at about 01:50 BST on Sunday to reports of an assault. A 19-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He has since been released on bail, pending further enquiries, the force added.

JJ, a young man with dark hair and brown eyes.

Talking on behalf of the family, JJ's uncle Louis Sumner said: "When the incident took place, they called my sister to say it was life-threatening and we needed to get there urgently - that's how serious it was.

"He didn't actually realise he had lost his sight until he woke up from surgery and we had to tell him that he is never going to be able to see again from that eye."

JJ's family are appealing for anyone with information to contact police.

His uncle added: "Over 100 people were at that party. We know there are photos and videos out there, but we really need people to send it to the police and come forward. Imagine if this was your friend or your child."

JJ is now in remission after two years of cancer treatment, but his family said losing his eye had been harder for him to come to terms with than his cancer diagnosis.

"There is a cure for cancer, but there isn't a cure for losing your eye," Sumner said.

He described his nephew as outgoing and friendly, and someone who loved playing video games and drawing.

He added JJ had been looking forward to learning to drive and losing an eye would be "such a shock for him".
