Chessington World of Adventures has been forced to shut its doors following a water outage in the local area on Monday.

The theme park announced on its website that it would be closed as the outage continues to affect its operations.

“All tickets booked for today will be automatically revalidated under our Return Promise and can be used on a future date. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding,” the closure notice read.

It comes as amber heat health alerts have been issued for the capital as temperatures are forecast to soar into the mid-30Cs again this week.

Thames Water confirmed that a burst water main was impacting water services in the KT9 area.

The utility company said a specialist team had located the burst and was working to carry out repairs.

Users on social media complained about waiting in queues to be let in after the 10am opening time, before eventually being informed that the park would remain shut.

In a reply to one user, the unofficial fan account for the theme park, Chessington Buzz, said the park was shut for health and safety reasons.

The same post added the park had also suffered a power cut on Saturday and poor availability on Sunday.

Others made light of the situation, writing: “Water shame!”

In a statement, Chessington World of Adventures confirmed to The Standard that customers can rebook for a date in the next nine months or request a refund if rebooking is not suitable.

"We are currently experiencing operational disruption due to a burst water main that is affecting the local area. As a result, the attraction is closed today while our teams work closely with Thames Water and local partners to restore normal operations as quickly and safely as possible,” the statement read.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of our guests and can confirm that anyone impacted will be automatically revalidated under our Return Promise. The safety of our guests and employees remains our highest priority."

The theme park closure comes in the middle of the school summer holidays and during a typically busy time for the attraction. According to Queue Times, the park was expected to be “packed” at 77 per cent capacity on Monday.

The UKHSA has issued amber heat health alerts for London and the South East, as well as much of the rest of the country, from Tuesday August 11 at 9am until Friday August 14 at 9pm.

With temperatures set to soar once again in the capital, the Met Office is considering issuing a rare red health alert.

The national forecaster said it was expecting temperatures to climb to the mid 30Cs later in the week, with the heat peaking at 36C in some spots on Thursday.

If the forecasts prove correct, London will see its fifth heatwave this summer, following record-breaking temperatures earlier this year.

The capital has been in drought since July 29, with fields and parks turning into tinderboxes, driving up the wildfire risk, and more than 25 million people have restrictions on water use as utilities keep a close eye on resources.

England and Wales have had their driest July in records dating back to 1836, with 19 counties of England seeing no rain for the entire month, provisional statistics have shown.

Southern England also had its hottest July on record, and the UK and England had their second hottest July, Met Office figures show.
