The UK is being treated to another full moon tonight, known as the Harvest Moon.
The Harvest Moon is usually the ninth full moon of the year, but due to May’s second and very rare full blue moon, it will be our 10th.
The Harvest Moon is one of the most unusual of the year, since it usually appears brighter than other moons and rises earlier – which is why you’ll also be able to see it earlier than most other full moons of 2026.
But where did it get its name, and will you actually be able to see the Harvest Moon tonight?

What is the Harvest Moon?
Each monthly full moon is given a name that often reflects the season and its nature at the time.
September’s full moon is usually known as the Harvest Moon, as it is linked to the traditional harvest season and is usually the full moon nearest to the autumnal equinox, which falls on September 23 this year.
Its brightness and early rise also meant it once allowed farmers to continue harvesting throughout the night.
However, the moon is also known by other names, including the corn moon or the barley moon.
Will the Harvest Moon be visible in the UK?
The stunning Harvest Moon will be visible in the UK as it rises ahead of its peak at around 5.49pm tonight, and will remain visible throughout the night.
Unfortunately, today’s weather forecast doesn’t look optimal for watching the sky. The Met Office has predicted rain across the country, with the northern and western areas of the UK set to be worst hit.
There may be periods of drier weather in the south and east, but the cloud cover and rainfall will likely hinder any attempts to enjoy the lunar event.
