Michael Carrick must end winless run as he looks to save Old Trafford job
Michael Carrick sack latest as Manchester United manager expects to remain in charge

Manchester United take on Roma tonight as they return to Champions League action at Old Trafford.

Though we are still in the early stages of the marathon league phase it is a potentially huge game for Michael Carrick, who is under severe pressure to save his job.

Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Chelsea means Man Utd have lost three on the bounce, four out of five and now gone winless in nine consecutive matches across all competitions - their worst such run since the 1988/89 season.

They have not won a single game since September 10, when their last home fixture in the Champions League saw them demolish Azerbaijani debutants Sabah FK 4-0.

It has been a total tale of woe since then both at home and on the continent, where United were brushed aside by Atletico Madrid and Como - both listless losses followed by explosive, headline-grabbing post-match interviews from senior players, first Lisandro Martinez and then captain Bruno Fernandes.

Carrick will be desperate to avoid a repeat on Tuesday night, with Roma’s visit and that of Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday preceding another review of his position from the club hierarchy that is expected to take place during the November international break.

However, it could be tough going against a Roma team who remain unbeaten in Serie A this season after 10 games, sitting third and four points off top spot after thrashing struggling Udinese 5-2 at the weekend.

Eyes on the prize: Manchester United face Roma in the Champions League at Old Trafford

Despite their extensive injury problems that have seen them bring a squad featuring only 17 outfield players to England, Gian Piero Gasperini’s Giallorossi are thriving following back-to-back victories and four in their last five - including a 4-0 trouncing of Slovan Bratislava in their last European outing.

Why isn’t Manchester United vs Roma on TNT Sports?

Manchester United vs Roma will not be broadcast live in the UK on TNT Sports. That is because under the current Champions League rights agreement on these shores, Amazon Prime Video has the first pick of one Tuesday night fixture to show exclusively on their platform up until the semi-finals.

This week they have chosen United vs Roma, which kicks off at 8pm GMT at Old Trafford. Coverage on Amazon begins at 6:30pm, hosted by Gabby Logan.

Expert punditry comes from ex-United stalwarts Wayne Rooney, Nicky Butt and Ashley Young, with Alan Shearer on co-commentary duties alongside Jon Champion.

Amazon’s current arrangement will continue from 2027-2031 as per the terms of the next Champions League TV rights deal, which will see the bulk of matches head to US streaming giants Paramount in an agreement struck in 2025 worth well over £1billion.

Highlights will remain on the BBC, with Sky Sports buying the rights to show all Europa League and Conference League games in the UK from next season.
