A 72-year-old woman is in a life-threatening condition in hospital following a two-car crash on the A73 in South Lanarkshire.

The collision, which involved a blue Honda CR-V and a white Volkswagen Golf, happened at about 13:40 on Thursday at the junction with Sherifflats Road near Thankerton village.

The woman, who was a passenger in the Honda, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with the 72-year-old male driver, who was later discharged.

Police Scotland said the 34-year-old male driver of the Volkswagen was treated at the scene. He was arrested in connection with road traffic offences and released pending further inquiries.

The road was closed while officers carried out investigations and reopened at about 23:30.

Sgt Gary Stewart said: "Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to get in touch.

"If you were driving in the area around the time of the crash please check any dash-cam footage that you have and contact us if you have captured something that could assist with our investigation."
