A woman said she was shocked and disgusted by what she described as a "depraved" adults-only section of a family Halloween attraction.

Robyn Doughty said she expected "fun scares" at Newsham Scream Park in Liverpool but the optional Hellfire Club experience included obscene sexual language and physical elements for which there had been no adequate warning.

The attraction said the over-18s section "centred around a sinister secret society" and visitors had to sign a waiver outlining "the nature of the experience" before entering.

Doughty said the attraction should "explicitly warn people" about what she described as a "sickening" experience that "doesn't belong at a family park".

In a statement, the scream park said its "terms and conditions, which must be agreed to before entering the attraction, outline the nature of the experience, including its adult and horror themes, physical interaction and sensory effects".

In a post on social media, Doughty, 33, said the experience made graphic references to sex acts and incest and "felt like a simulation of sexual assault, sexual degradation, sexual violation".

"Before you go in you are asked to sign a waiver and you are given a safe word but that's in a busy queue where you're surrounded by your mates and there's loud music," she said in the post.

"Their website lists be aware of PTSD and anxiety but nowhere does it say graphically sexual."

Doughty told the BBC it was "irresponsible and unjustifiable to make a mockery of sexual assault".

She said she had enjoyed the wider attraction before and had gone again in a group of seven which included two 15-year-olds.

The teenagers had been able to buy tickets for the optional Hellfire Club but, when they were not allowed in due to their age, Doughty and her friend used them.

She said she was "angry" and "in disbelief" at the sexually graphic nature of the experience.

"It wasn't a joke. It wasn't funny," she said.

Newsham Scream Park said the Hellfire Club was "designed to deliver an intense experience" and was optional and adults-only, with ID required for anyone under the age of 21.

"Guest welfare is a priority throughout the attraction and our terms and conditions, which much be agreed to before entering the attraction, outline the nature of the experience, including its adult and horror themes, physical interaction and sensory effects," it said..

"They also highlight that some elements may cause distress, identify circumstances in which the attraction may not be suitable, and explain that guests can end their participation immediately, at any time, using the safe word provided without explanation."

The park added guests changing their mind after reading the terms and conditions could have a refund and said it recognised the themes "will not be suitable for everyone and encourage all guests to read the information provided carefully before deciding whether to participate".
