A woman suffered a serious sexual assault when she was attacked by a man while walking her dog near a park in Blantyre.

The attack happened at about 22:00 on Tuesday near an open grassy area off Westerpark Avenue, near to Abernethy Avenue, in the South Lanarkshire town.

The woman was approached by a man who she didn't know and subjected to a serious sexual assault.

The man is described as a white male, 5ft 9in (1.75m) tall and was wearing dark clothing and a black beanie hat.

Det Sgt Raymond Giulianotti said: "This was a terrifying experience for the woman and extensive inquiries are ongoing to trace the individual responsible.

"This attack happened very close to a busy residential area, and we are appealing for help from the local community."

He asked anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious, or noticed a man matching the description to contact Police Scotland.
