Xabi Alonso has allayed injury fears over Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill.

The English defender was an unused substitute in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, with Alonso deeming him fit enough for the bench but not deciding to start him.

Colwill then started on Wednesday night in the 6-3 Carabao Cup win over Leeds United but was substituted for Wesley Fofana on 76 minutes.

After the match, Alonso was asked whether Colwill’s replacement was injury-related. He had headed straight down the tunnel after being taken off.

"No, no,” Alonso said. “It is just from little things that he's having, but we don't expect that it's an injury.”

That will come as a relief as Chelsea have important Premier League matches against Hull City and Brentford before the international break.

The Leeds head coach Daniel Farke described Wednesday night’s match against Chelsea as “nuts”.

Speaking after his side’s rollercoaster defeat to the Blues, he said: “I could give a 15-minute monologue about this game. Nuts. The message is that one small situation [the penalty] can change the world.

“When I think about the sixth goal, the ball would have come down in Fulham - but of course [Danny] Welbeck was in the way.”
